Although to some it may just look like the children here at W.O.K just go off and climb the first tree they find in camp……in fact, there have been risk assessments carried out for each tree by both the children and staff. A conversation will take place and the staff and children will discuss how safe the tree looks to climb and also how high they think they should climb. This is when a child is effectively managing their own risks and taking responsibility for their own actions. In this one simple process of climbing a tree, a child has covered three aspects of the curriculum. They have covered being an effective contributor, a responsible citizen and a successful learner. This is why here at Woodland O.K. we believe that the natural environment is the best place for a child to learn.
